Impact of seed system interventions on food and nutrition security in low- and middle-income countries: A scoping review

The role of seed systems in nutrition smallholder farmers has received little attention. This review mapped evidence impact on nutrition, identifying themes from 43 studies as direct supply, improving access, and adoption improved seed. Results had more positive than mixed/negative impacts food security, household resilience, dietary quality, diversity and/or status. Studies were skewed towards cereals compared to other species traditional/indigenous seed, geared rather the system. While most evaluated impact, few reported strategies for sustainable inclusion into farmer systems. Enabling factors contributing included use multi-component interventions gender-sensitive participatory approaches that consider contexts.
